The Falaise Gap, Normandy 12th

German troops faced prepared to break out to stop being encircled by the
the Allied forces. The German forces attempted to cross the Dives River
in and around the town of Chambois, south-east of Falaise. driving
between the Canadian, British and Polish forces coming from the north,
and the US forces coming from the south. and was known as the
Falaise gap. Amongst this German force was the 2nd SS Panzer
Corps, which had been at Normandy relentless bombing by Allied
aircraft. decimated the German force and the Allies cut of the German
escape through he Falaise Gap. and the Allies captured over 38,000
German troops and thousands of Guns and artillery pieces. These

Typhoon Country by Nicholas Trudgian Flt Lieutenant Roy Crane, flying a Typhoon of 181 Squadron
from their recently established base in Normandy, makes an attack on a
German road convoy in the Falaise area, early August 1944. The Typhoons
ground attack fighters played a major role in defeating the German armoured
divisions in the battle of the Falaise Gap.

A Typhoon of 181 Squadron flown by Flt Lt Roy Crane is shown attacking a German armoured column in th Falaise Gap in August 1944. Typhoons played a major role in destroying a large number of German armour and disrupting German movements during the battle of Falaise Gap.
