Sword beach was the furthest east of the five Normandy invasion beaches - the others were codenamed Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah. Sword beach was subdivided into four areas; Queen, Roger, Peter and Oboe beaches, and was a five mile beach from Ouistreham at the mouth of the River Orne on the east stretching west to Lion-sur-Mer. At Sword Beach were the British 3rd Division, the 1st Lancashire Regiment, 2nd East Yorkshire regiment, the 8th Infantry Brigade and 13th / 18th Hussars. The task of taking Caen and the airfields near by was given to the 3rd Division. Losses on the first day were 630 dead and wounded from a force of 29,000 men.

D-Day, Sword Beach. Normandy 1944 by David Pentland  After suppressing the initial German defences, a Sherman " Crab" flail tank of the 22nd Dragoons, 79th Armoured Division,  clears a path through a minefield to allow tanks of 27th armoured Brigade, and men of 3rd Infantry Division to breakout  from the beaches. Fire support from surviving Sherman DD (amphibious) tanks of 13th /`18th Hussars (QMO), proved invaluable in the initial push towards Caen

Queen Beach, one of the 4 sectors of Sword Beach, where most of the landings of D-Day were carried out. The Queen Beach sector which extended for 1.5km between Lion-sur-Mer and the western edge of Ouistretham. The attack was thus concentrated on a narrow one-brigade front. For once the DD tanks and other armour came in exactly on time and ahead of the infantry. The 8th brigade, with the 1st Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment on the right and the 2nd East Yorkshire on the left.

D Day 1944 (3), Sword Beach & the British Airborne Landings by Ken Ford.

At 0016hrs on 6 June 1944 a Horsa glider ground to a halt a mere 60yards from the Orne Canal bridge at Benouville in Normandy.  A small group of British paratroopers burst from it and stormed the bridge within minutes.  The Allied liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe had begun.  Within a few hours landing craft would swarm towards Ouistreham as British 3rd Division swept ashore at Sword Beach.  The battle would then begin to break through to relieve the paratroopers.  In the third of four D-Day volumes, Ken Ford details the assault by British 6th Airborne Division and  the British landings on Sword Beach that secured the vital left flank of the invasion.
